We are so happy and blessed to have the Kuwait National Day and Liberation Day at the end of February. It’s nice because by the time it comes, we’re more than ready for a break. During my first year we went to Dubai, and last year to Oman.
This year, the school gave us 5 days! And we stayed in Kuwait, for the first time…we’d always been advised to get out of the country for this weekend, but this year just didn’t allow for it.
On the Wednesday night after school, we wiied. Projected on the wall!
Because it was the first time we were staying here, we were slightly anxious about the possible noise level in Salmiya, so on Thursday night we got out of the epicentre and headed to the edge of the universe…our friend Katie’s house in Ishbelia. It’s really about 25/30 minutes away, not so far, but for some reason it feels like the other side of the world.
On the way, around 3:30pm, we saw many Kuwaities already out in the streets celebrating. We were very glad to be going in the opposite direction…Gulf Road was bumper to bumper to bumper….
Kuwaities are VERY patriotic, very proud of their country (as anyone should be!) Here’s some of the ways that they show it during Liberation/National Day weekend:
They love to spray foam at your car.
And wear shirts that look like the Kuwait flag. And spray you with water guns that hopefully contain only water….
Some cars look specially painted just for this weekend.
And line the streets, ready to spray any thing that gets close. Note: fluorescent is coming back in style. WHY?
Even the mall decorated itself in the Kuwait colours!
At Katie’s place, we wiied some more. We rock the Karaoke Revolution (and the DDR)
On Friday night, we ate dinner on the balcony of a restaurant beside Gulf Road, where we could have front-row seats to the craziness. Do you see the fireworks in this picture?
A truck pulled up with a ton of kids in the back…
And unloaded them all to join the craziness.
Next year we’ll have to join in, with a couple cans of foam and silly string. Do you think this could catch on in Canada?
